Understanding the Colors of Antifreeze Coolants: What They Mean and Why They Matter

It seems like every day we receive a call asking for antifreeze by color.  Do you have “red” antifreeze?, “yellow”?, and so on.

Antifreeze, also known as engine coolant, is a critical fluid in automotive and industrial engines. It regulates engine temperature, prevents freezing in cold climates, and inhibits corrosion. One of the most visible features of antifreeze is its color, which often indicates its chemical formulation and intended application. However, color alone is not a definitive guide, as manufacturers may use different dyes for similar formulations. Still, understanding the general color codes can help vehicle owners and technicians make informed decisions.

Common Antifreeze Colors and Their Meanings

Color Technology Base Chemistry Typical Use
Green Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT) Ethylene glycol + silicates/phosphates Older vehicles (pre-2000s), frequent changes needed
Red Organic Acid Technology (OAT) Ethylene glycol + organic acids GM vehicles (Dex-Cool), long-life coolant
Orange/Yellow Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) Mix of IAT and OAT Ford, Chrysler, European vehicles
Blue Phosphate-based OAT or HOAT Borate-free OAT Japanese and Korean vehicles
Pink/Purple Silicated HOAT or Phosphated OAT Varies European and some Asian vehicles

Chemical Composition and Function

Antifreeze is typically composed of:

  • Ethylene glycol or propylene glycol: Lowers freezing point and raises boiling point.
  • Water (usually deionized): Facilitates heat transfer.
  • Additives: Prevent corrosion, foaming, and scaling.
  • Dyes: Provide color for identification and leak detection.

Antifreeze formulations generally are 35-60% glycol with corrosion inhibitors, anti-foaming agents, other additives, and dyes.  The color is not necessary and could vary by manufacturer but helps to distinguish between different products.

Why Color Matters—But Isn’t Everything

While color can be a helpful indicator, it is not a reliable substitute for checking the coolant’s specifications. Mixing incompatible coolants can lead to:

  • Corrosion
  • Clogging
  • Reduced heat transfer
  • Engine damage

Coolants that use silicates mixed with coolants that do not, for example, can lead to not having enough of either technology to properly protect your engine and its cooling system.  Using a coolant that has silicates in place of one that does not could also prevent proper heat transfer,Facebook Link Cover (2) causing the engine to run hotter.

Maintenance and Replacement Intervals

Coolant lifespan varies by type:

  • Green (IAT): ~3 years or 30,000–50,000 miles
  • Red/Orange (OAT/HOAT): ~5 years or 100,000–150,000 miles
  • Blue/Pink (OAT variants): ~5 years or 150,000 miles

Always consult your vehicle’s owner manual or a professional technician before replacing or topping off coolant.

Conclusion

Understanding antifreeze colors can help you maintain your vehicle’s cooling system effectively. However, always verify the chemical compatibility and manufacturer recommendations before use. When in doubt, consult your owner’s manual or your OEM.

In 1950, Mr. Franklin Sutton laid the foundation for a legacy in agribusiness by selling fertilizer, including Anhydrous Ammonia. Recognizing the need for proper application equipment, he pioneered the development of applicators, giving rise to what became known as “The Sutton System.” Over time, The Sutton System expanded its offerings, manufacturing essential farm equipment such as trailers and harrows and later began servicing farm accounts with bolt bins and filters.

In 1986, Mr. Sutton broadened his vision, entering the lubricants industry with the acquisition of Moultrie Grocery Company’s oil business and route trucks. This move positioned the company as a trusted supplier of engine oil, antifreeze, and hydraulic oil. Since then, the business has grown into a premier marketer for industry-leading brands, including Mystik, Clarion, Lucas Oil Products, Martin Lubricants, Technical Chemical Company, and Chevron, where it proudly holds the title of First Source Marketer. By the mid-1990s, fuel became a key part of the company’s product line, further cementing its role as a vital partner to the agricultural community.

Today, the legacy of innovation and service continues under the leadership of Mr. Sutton’s sons, James and John Paul Sutton. Their dedication to excellence in fuel, lubricants, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), and a diverse range of related products, has solidified Sutton System Sales as a cornerstone of the industry.

James Sutton has been deeply involved in numerous organizations and initiatives that support Colquitt County’s growth and safety. As Chief of the Ellenton Community Volunteer Fire Department and an active member of the Colquitt County Volunteer Fire Association, he has played a critical role in emergency response, firefighter training, and community safety efforts. His dedication to public service extends to law enforcement support as a member of the Sheriff’s Citizen Committee, where he has contributed to strengthening community relations and public safety initiatives. Additionally, he has assisted State Representative Chas Cannon with Department of Transportation (DOT) projects, advocating for infrastructure improvements that benefit local businesses and residents. His leadership extends to the private sector as President of the Southeastern Lubrication Association, where he serves as a liaison between Chevron and SELA.  In addition to his civic and professional contributions, James serves as a Deacon and Treasurer at Buck Creek Baptist Church, providing financial oversight and faith-based leadership to support his congregation and community. Through these roles, he has made a lasting impact on Colquitt County’s safety, economy, and overall well-being.

John Paul Sutton has been a cornerstone of the Colquitt County community, dedicating the past several years to supplying local fuel as Fuel Sales Manager working closely with the Colquitt County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education. His commitment extends beyond business—he plays a key role in supporting local initiatives by helping to provide financial assistance for community projects and organizations. A strong advocate for youth and agriculture, John Paul actively sponsors programs such as Colquitt County’s Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, and Cheerleading teams, as well as the Junior Livestock Association, Young Farmers, and Junior Women’s Club. His dedication to service also extends to his faith, where he serves as a Deacon and Chairman of the Deacons at Buck Creek Baptist Church.

James and John Paul Sutton are exemplary candidates for the 2025 Agribusiness Person of the Year award, embodying a legacy of innovation, leadership, and community service that has significantly impacted Colquitt County and beyond.

Carrying forward the vision established by their father, Franklin Sutton, they have played a pivotal role in expanding and modernizing Sutton System Sales, ensuring that farmers and agribusinesses have access to high-quality fuel, lubricants, and essential agricultural products. This year marks 75 years of business, and it is a testament to the company’s resilience, growth, and continued dedication to serving the agricultural industry. What started in 1950 as a small fertilizer and equipment business has evolved into a leading supplier of fuel, lubricants, and Diesel Exhaust Fluid, playing a critical role in supporting local farms and businesses. Under James and John Paul’s leadership, the company continues to innovate, expand, and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the agricultural community, ensuring its success for generations to come.

Their combined efforts in agriculture, business, public service, and community development make them more than deserving of this recognition. James and John Paul Sutton are not just agribusiness leaders—they are pillars of Colquitt County, shaping its future with dedication, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Why are oil viscosities getting thinner? Is that good for the engine? Will it do the same job?

These are common questions that we hear from customers and want to take a minute to address these concerns.

25 years ago, the most common viscosity grades were 10w30, 10w40, and 20w50 for passenger cars and light trucks, and 15w40 for heavy duty diesel engines. Today, the requirements of vehicles and oil have led to thinner viscosity grades being preferred by manufacturers. In passenger cars and light trucks, we are seeing viscosity grades as low as 0w16, with 0w20, 5w20, and 5w30 being the most common. Heavy duty diesel is most commonly filled with 10w30 now, with 5w40 and 5w30 also becoming more common.

Why thinner viscosities?

Fuel Mileage. Manufacturers have had to find ways to increase fuel efficiency and meet standards put in place by government regulations. So how does thinner viscosity engine oil help with fuel mileage? Imagine trying to walk through a pool filled with molasses versus a pool filled with water. It would take more energy to walk through the pool of molasses. The same is true for thicker viscosity oil. It takes more energy, which means more fuel, to make engine parts move through thicker oils. Lower viscosity oil engine oils take less energy, which means better fuel efficiency.

Engine Protection. How does thinner oil protect better? Engines today are designed taller and thinner than engines of the past. This means it is further from the oil pan to the top of the engine and takes longer for the oil to reach the top of the engine at start up. After your engine has stopped running, all the oil drains back down to the oil pan and sits waiting for the engine to start again. When the engine starts again, the oil must quickly be pumped by the oil pump back to the top of the engine to get everything lubricated and prevent wear. Thinner viscosity oils allow for faster lubrication from top to bottom to keep the effects of dry starts to a minimum.

Engine Component Life. Lighter viscosity oils also create less stress on other components, extending their life. The oil pump has an easier time moving oil throughout the engine. The oil gets pumped throughout the engine quicker, making startups easier on the starter and using less energy from the battery. All of this and more leads to extended component life.

These are just a few reasons why there has been a move in the industry to lighter viscosity engine oils. Rest assured, engine oils today are made tougher and tested to meet the most rigorous standards to ensure you get the most protection. Always consult your owner’s

manual and know that we are here to help you make the best decision on what to use to keep your equipment performing at its best.

When choosing a product, always bet on a reputable product from a distributor that has your best interest in mind. We believe in providing quality products and service, while putting our customers’ needs first. And that is why “Sutton Sense Makes Cents” for your business.

In today’s world, maintaining equipment condition and extending component life is more critical than ever. Not only does it help to prevent unnecessary downtime, but it saves money that is wasted on repairs and replacement. Replacement parts and equipment are becoming increasingly hard to get, and the lengthy delays for parts create further setbacks in production for you and your business. When you are NOT producing, you are NOT making money.

To help reduce costly downtime for our customers, we have introduced the S4R Lubrication Program for those who want to take preventative maintenance to the next level. The S4R Lubrication Program is designed to help you get the most out of your equipment and keep your business running smoothly. Our program is based on the “4 R’s” of lubrication: The Right Product in the Right Place at the Right Time, applied the Right Way.

Right Product.  We will come to your business and conduct an extensive lube survey, gathering information on your equipment and needs. We will then provide you with a simplified lubricant list based on OEM recommendations, operating conditions, and our knowledge of lubricants.

Right Place.  The recommendations we make are useless if the products are not used in the correct places. Through labels on reservoirs, containers, and tanks, we try to help mitigate putting the Right Product in the wrong place. Upon request, we will also provide a completed list of equipment and the recommended lubricants.

Right Time.  Today’s lubricants are advanced products and can withstand the long haul if monitored correctly.  We will help you to develop an oil analysis program to maximize the life of your lubricants. In some cases, we can extend drain intervals to 3-4 times the current rate.

Right Way.  With the help of vendors, we can provide training on proper lubricant storage and handling, as well as fundamentals to help educate you and your people on how critical lubricants are for your operation.

If you’re ready to take your preventative maintenance program to the next level, wait no longer! Let’s get started today with your journey in the S4R Lubrication Program.

Chevron is simplifying the Chevron Delo product line to move from four categories of engine oil to two categories of top-tier products: synthetic blends and full synthetics.

Here is what it means for you: beginning in January 2024, Chevron began sunsetting the conventional products in the HDEO product line, including Delo 400 SAE SDE 10W-30 and Delo 400 SAE SDE 15W-40. In place of conventional Delo 400 SAE SDE 15W-40, we will upgrade our customers from conventional to our syn-blend Delo 400 XLE SB SAE15W-40 – which will be offered at the same price you’ve come to expect from conventional Delo products. This new high-quality synthetic-blend SAE 15W-40 product will complement our existing Delo 400 XLE SAE 10W-30.

The syn-blend products in the Delo product line have been designed to meet the needs of today’s modern engines and can be used in all the same situations where conventional products were used. Moving up to a syn-blend will also provide our customers with a product that’s been engineered to deliver longer oil life, better wear protection and longer engine life, all while meeting the latest emissions and reliability standards.

And you won’t need to hunt to find these syn-blend products. They’ll be found in the recognizable Chevron blue bottle with the red cap you know and expect.
