2024 Agribusinessmen of the Year

In 1950, Mr. Franklin Sutton laid the foundation for a legacy in agribusiness by selling fertilizer, including Anhydrous Ammonia. Recognizing the need for proper application equipment, he pioneered the development of applicators, giving rise to what became known as “The Sutton System.” Over time, The Sutton System expanded its offerings, manufacturing essential farm equipment such as trailers and harrows and later began servicing farm accounts with bolt bins and filters.

In 1986, Mr. Sutton broadened his vision, entering the lubricants industry with the acquisition of Moultrie Grocery Company’s oil business and route trucks. This move positioned the company as a trusted supplier of engine oil, antifreeze, and hydraulic oil. Since then, the business has grown into a premier marketer for industry-leading brands, including Mystik, Clarion, Lucas Oil Products, Martin Lubricants, Technical Chemical Company, and Chevron, where it proudly holds the title of First Source Marketer. By the mid-1990s, fuel became a key part of the company’s product line, further cementing its role as a vital partner to the agricultural community.

Today, the legacy of innovation and service continues under the leadership of Mr. Sutton’s sons, James and John Paul Sutton. Their dedication to excellence in fuel, lubricants, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), and a diverse range of related products, has solidified Sutton System Sales as a cornerstone of the industry.

James Sutton has been deeply involved in numerous organizations and initiatives that support Colquitt County’s growth and safety. As Chief of the Ellenton Community Volunteer Fire Department and an active member of the Colquitt County Volunteer Fire Association, he has played a critical role in emergency response, firefighter training, and community safety efforts. His dedication to public service extends to law enforcement support as a member of the Sheriff’s Citizen Committee, where he has contributed to strengthening community relations and public safety initiatives. Additionally, he has assisted State Representative Chas Cannon with Department of Transportation (DOT) projects, advocating for infrastructure improvements that benefit local businesses and residents. His leadership extends to the private sector as President of the Southeastern Lubrication Association, where he serves as a liaison between Chevron and SELA.  In addition to his civic and professional contributions, James serves as a Deacon and Treasurer at Buck Creek Baptist Church, providing financial oversight and faith-based leadership to support his congregation and community. Through these roles, he has made a lasting impact on Colquitt County’s safety, economy, and overall well-being.

John Paul Sutton has been a cornerstone of the Colquitt County community, dedicating the past several years to supplying local fuel as Fuel Sales Manager working closely with the Colquitt County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education. His commitment extends beyond business—he plays a key role in supporting local initiatives by helping to provide financial assistance for community projects and organizations. A strong advocate for youth and agriculture, John Paul actively sponsors programs such as Colquitt County’s Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, and Cheerleading teams, as well as the Junior Livestock Association, Young Farmers, and Junior Women’s Club. His dedication to service also extends to his faith, where he serves as a Deacon and Chairman of the Deacons at Buck Creek Baptist Church.

James and John Paul Sutton are exemplary candidates for the 2025 Agribusiness Person of the Year award, embodying a legacy of innovation, leadership, and community service that has significantly impacted Colquitt County and beyond.

Carrying forward the vision established by their father, Franklin Sutton, they have played a pivotal role in expanding and modernizing Sutton System Sales, ensuring that farmers and agribusinesses have access to high-quality fuel, lubricants, and essential agricultural products. This year marks 75 years of business, and it is a testament to the company’s resilience, growth, and continued dedication to serving the agricultural industry. What started in 1950 as a small fertilizer and equipment business has evolved into a leading supplier of fuel, lubricants, and Diesel Exhaust Fluid, playing a critical role in supporting local farms and businesses. Under James and John Paul’s leadership, the company continues to innovate, expand, and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the agricultural community, ensuring its success for generations to come.

Their combined efforts in agriculture, business, public service, and community development make them more than deserving of this recognition. James and John Paul Sutton are not just agribusiness leaders—they are pillars of Colquitt County, shaping its future with dedication, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
